The bulk of the calories in this diet come from olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals (such as wheat breads, e.g.), with lots of fruits and vegetables. The plan avoids fatty red meat, refined grains like white bread, lards and butters, saturated fats, rendered products, and sugars.

The Mediterranean diet has numerous benefits. First, because it is low in fat, it is easy to lose and maintain weight on it. Additionally, it is very good for the heart due to the same low fat content. And because it emphasizes delicious, traditional Greek and Italian dishes, it is a lot easier to keep to than some of the more faddy diets that offer quick results. It’s important to remember that weight loss and good health is a marathon, not a sprint. While it’s really tempting to think only of getting into that swimsuit in time or dropping that gut as quickly as possible, that’s only a short-term goal. In fact, that quick-term weight loss may come at the cost of long-term healthiness. When the diet is combined with regular moderate exercise, weight loss is almost guaranteed. A better time to consume that starch carb meal is in the afternoon. That way your body has the entire rest of the day to burn it off.

Freeze diluted fruit juice or fruit purees. Puree a cup of peaches, blackberries, or watermelon, add the juice of one lemon and a cup of water. Freeze for a tasty but low calorie snack.

Keep frozen water bottles in the freezer to grab when you’re on the go. Water expands when it freezes so empty out about an inch of the water before freezing. In the evening fill a pitcher nearly full with ice cubes and then water. Place on the kitchen counter with glasses or on the coffee table. When you’re watching TV the water is visible, which reminds you to drink.

So what’s the strategy for finally losing the weight? Well, you must first realize something. Losing weight isn’t easy. It’s hard. That’s the plain truth simple and honest. There’s going to be some pain. There’s going to be some temptation, but you can’t let that stop you. If you particularly need to lose a lot of weight, you may have to work very hard for a long time. You just have to realize these things. What does that mean? However, with a mindset like this, you will notice that you just have to have some high calorie-laden food very often.

However, remember this. Food only lasts about 15 minutes. Got a plate of steak and mash potatoes? It will be eaten up and gone in about 15 minutes. Then the joy of eating it will be over. You’ll have an empty plate in front of you, less money on you, and possibly an increasing waist line. However, a bubble bath can last an hour. A talk on the phone with a cherished friend can last two or more hours . A good movie can last two hours. The memory of the a special moment shared on vacation with a loved one can last a life time.

So what is that ice cream cone that will be devoured in 10 minutes or less? It’s over rated and it just isn’t worth it. Think of all food this way, and you won’t have a problem cutting calories or saying no to a free pizza.

The third and final step in the strategy for finally losing the weight is to cut calories out but don’t think of the calorie. Think of the food. You know that white sugary foods like white bread and white potatoes raise your glycemic levels sharply and usually end up going straight to fat storage. Because these foods are digested so quickly, they leave you feeling unsatisfied. So, just cut them out. Tell yourself you won’t have any “white foods” for two weeks, and you watch that weight drop right off. This is a definite no fail strategy.
