Do you believe that there is a diet plan that would help you lose weight without restricting your food intake in any way? I haven’t found it either. The best one for me places the least amount of restrictions on my food habits. Remember, to lose weight properly and safely we need to eat healthy foods. Placing unnecessary food restrictions on yourself will do you no good.

Depriving yourself of your favorite foods will certainly lead to failure in the long run. (Of course if your favorite foods are all high in sugar and simple carbohydtrates, you will have a difficult time training yourself.) Aren’t you looking for a healthy, practical way to lose weight? The program you choose should stick to the basics of dieting, otherwise you will never be able to lose weight and keep it off. Here are some suggestions you might consider when searching for the “perfect” weight loss program. 

1. Metabolism is one of the biggest factors in your weight loss: Your body’s metabolic rate will determine how much weight you can lose over a set period of time. If your metabolic rate is high, you can lose a lot of weight even while at rest; on the other hand, if your metabolic rate is slow, then you should find ways to increases it. There are safe methods for increasing your metabolism that do not involve pills and supplements. If you eat 4 or 5 smaller, and healthier meals your metabolism will increase.

2. Regular exercise is very important: Consult your physician before beginning any strenuous exercise regimen. Most people can increase their metabolism and energy simply by walking. Try not to overdo it and build yourself up to a brisk walk 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes. You’ll be surprised how good you’ll feel. Also some resistance training will help you tone your muscles and that helps to burn calories as well.

3. Take your time: You should never attempt to lose weight too fast. We all want instant gratification so we can get into those clothes that got smaller, but ideally you should lose no more than 1 or 2 pounds per week. If you lose more than that then it can affect your health negatively. If you think you are losing weight too fast, you should immediately see a doctor.

4. Eat low fat foods only: After all, if you are trying to lose weight, isn’t it fat you want to lose? Too many simple carbohydrates, fats, sugar and some oils become stored as fat deposits. It just doesn’t make sense to add more fat to the fat we want to lose. Lean meat, fresh or flash frozen vegetables, some fruits and complex carbohydrates in the right proportion will be healthy and smart choices. And watch what you drink. Water is the best hydration you can get.

5. Ask for help: If you belong to a gym, church, have a friend who wants to lose weight too, you will find encouragement. Sometimes we need a pat on the back and alternately a kick in the rear. Together with a partner, we all manage to succeed at a higher rate. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and when the time is right, reward yourself.

Stay the course, for if you are to be successful, this is a lifestyle change, not another fad diet.
